The home-office window problem is specific: you need to kill the glare washing out your monitor without turning the room into a cave you have to light artificially at noon. Blackout is the wrong tool — it solves glare by removing all the daylight, which defeats the point of having a window. The right tool is a solar shade, and the number that governs it is the openness percentage. Get that number right for your exposure and you cut glare, keep a usable view, and work in natural light. Why solar, not blackout

Glare is direct and reflected sunlight hitting your screen and your eyes. You can defeat it two ways: block all the light (blackout), or filter the harsh direct light while letting soft, even daylight through (solar). For an office you want the second — a solar shade knocks down the glare and UV while preserving brightness and, crucially, an outward view, so the room stays pleasant and you are not reaching for a lamp at midday. Openness percentage: the one number that matters

Solar shade fabrics are rated by openness factor — the percentage of the fabric area that is open weave versus solid. It is the single spec that decides how the shade behaves, and it runs an intuitive trade:

  • Lower openness (1%–3%) blocks more light and glare and gives more daytime privacy, but preserves less of a crisp view — you see out, but softly.
  • Higher openness (5%–10%) preserves a sharper view and more brightness, but controls glare less aggressively and offers less privacy, especially with the sun behind you.

Think of it as a dial between "maximum glare control, softer view" and "maximum view, gentler glare control." There is no universally correct number; there is a correct number for your window's exposure and your tolerance for a lit screen.

Choosing openness by exposure

Match the openness to how much sun the window actually takes:

  • Harsh west or south exposure (strong afternoon or midday sun straight at the desk): go lower openness, around 1%–3%, to knock down intense glare. You sacrifice a little view sharpness, but a 5% shade will not tame a blasting western sun on a monitor.
  • Moderate east or filtered exposure (morning sun, or sun that is not aimed at the screen): 3%–5% is a comfortable middle — real glare control with a good view.
  • North-facing or gentle light (soft, indirect daylight): 5%–10% preserves the brightest view and most openness, since there is little harsh glare to fight in the first place.

When in doubt on a bright window, err toward lower openness — it is easier to live with a slightly softer view than with glare you cannot defeat.

Privacy: read the fabric color and the light direction

One honest caveat about solar shades: privacy is directional and depends on which side is brighter. During the day, with more light outside than in, you can see out and others largely cannot see in. After dark, with your office lit and the outside dark, that reverses — a solar shade is not a privacy shade at night. Darker fabrics improve glare control and daytime view-through; lighter fabrics reflect more heat and read brighter. The zebra alternative: flexibility in one shade

If your office light changes through the day, a zebra (dual) shade is worth considering. Placement and desk setup help, too

The shade does most of the work, but position matters. Ideally your monitor sits perpendicular to the window rather than facing it (glare) or backing it (a bright field behind the screen that tires your eyes). Where you cannot move the desk, lean toward lower openness. A motorized solar shade is a nice office touch — you can lower it as the sun swings around in the afternoon on a schedule, using any of the smart-shade automations — but it is a convenience, not a requirement.

If the office needs evening privacy or occasional dark

A solar shade is a daytime tool, so if your office doubles as a video-call room after dark or an occasional guest room, plan a second layer rather than asking the solar fabric to do a job it cannot. A blackout roller or cellular behind the solar shade, or a blackout-lined drape you draw in the evening, delivers the dark and the night privacy the solar fabric does not — the same two-layer logic as the bedroom blackout strategy.
