How this ranking reads a roller or solar shade

A roller is a fabric on a tube, so the fabric is the product: the ranking reads openness factor on solar screens, the opacity class on light-filtering and blackout fabrics, the headrail (exposed roll versus cassette, which changes the mount depth), the lift options and their width ranges, and whether light-blocking side and bottom tracks are offered. Sellers apply their own deductions and custom shades are made to size and generally not returnable, so the measuring guarantee is part of the judgment.

Openness is the whole decision on a solar shade

Openness factor is the share of the weave that is open. A lower number cuts more glare and more UV and gives more daytime privacy while making the view dimmer; a higher number keeps a crisp view and lets more glare through. Fabric color matters about as much as one step of openness: dark weaves read crisper and stop glare bounce, light weaves brighten the room and reflect more heat but haze the view. No solar screen is private after dark — with the lights on, the visibility runs the other way.

Rollers are not the darkness tool unless you mount them right

A blackout roller fabric passes no light, but the shade leaks at the sides of an inside mount and above the roll. An outside mount with overlap fixes most of it and side channels fix the rest; a cassette headrail closes the glow above the tube at the cost of extra mount depth.

Around 3% suits most sun-facing rooms; go lower for direct west or south sun on a desk or screen, higher for shaded windows where the view is the point. Order samples and tape them to the glass before committing, because weave color changes the effect as much as the number does.

Are solar shades private at night?

No. A screen is transparent from the darker side toward the brighter side, so after dark a lit room is visible from outside at any openness. Pair a solar shade with a room-darkening layer on any window that needs evening privacy.
