How a roman shade works

Lift cords or a cordless spring mechanism draw the fabric up through rings or tapes sewn to the back, so the shade folds into even horizontal bands as it rises and stacks at the headrail. Structured styles use slim battens or dowels inside the folds to keep them crisp; relaxed styles leave them out and let the bottom drape. Lowered, a roman hangs as a flat panel, which is why it takes lining so well — blackout, privacy, or interlining sits behind the face fabric without changing the look from the room. The raised stack covers the top of the glass, so a tall window gives you more clear view than a short one.

Roman shade styles

Flat romans are a single smooth panel that folds only when raised — the crispest, most tailored look and the one that shows a print best. Hobbled (teardrop) romans carry permanent overlapping folds down the whole shade, use more fabric, and read softer and more traditional. Relaxed or European romans skip the dowels so the hem curves into a gentle smile, a decorative choice more than a light-control one. Batten-back construction hides the rods behind the fabric; batten-front shows them as tailored ribs. Pick the style by the look you want lowered, because that is how a roman spends most of its life.

Lining, mounting, and where romans belong

Unlined romans filter light and show the weave; privacy lining stops silhouettes; blackout lining makes the panel opaque, though light still slips around the edges of an inside mount and at the fold lines. An outside mount with overlap darkens a room far better than an inside mount in the same fabric. Romans suit living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms with blackout lining; think twice over a kitchen sink or in a steamy bathroom, where fabric collects splashes and moisture, and on a shallow frame that cannot take the stack depth. Common questions

What is the difference between a roman shade and a roman blind?

Nothing structural. "Roman blind" is the usual term in British English and "roman shade" in American English, and sellers in the United States use both. Either way it is a fabric shade that lifts into horizontal folds.

Are roman shades blackout?

Only when ordered with blackout lining, and even then the fabric is opaque while the edges are not: an inside mount leaves a sliver of light at each side and the fold lines can glow at dawn. For a genuinely dark bedroom, choose blackout lining with an outside mount that overlaps the frame, or layer the roman over a blackout roller.

Do roman shades work on wide windows?

Up to a point. Fabric weight rises with width, the lift gets heavier, and every product has a published maximum width. Very wide openings are usually better served by two shades on one headrail, or by a motorized lift. Check the seller's maximum width and stack-depth figures before you commit a print to a big window.

Are roman shades cordless?

Most custom roman lines now offer cordless and motorized lifts, and cordless is the sensible default in any home with young children or pets. Corded versions are still sold; if you choose one, use the safety devices the maker includes and keep cords out of reach.
