Where is the best place to buy custom blinds online if you will measure and install them yourself? How the picks were judged

"Best" here means best for someone who measures and installs alone. Each seller is judged on what its own pages, re-read on 2026-10-20, publish about eight things: a measuring guarantee, refunds on a custom order, free samples, the standard warranty, shipping cost, lead time, published discounts or price matching, and help with measuring and installing.

1. SelectBlinds: best for a first-time measurer who wants free measuring cover

Best for: a first-time measurer. SelectBlinds says "We're a fully online DIY company, so we don't offer in-home services like measuring or installation"; you get its "guides and videos" and a free design consultant.

The measuring guarantee. The guarantees page, re-read on October 20, 2026, says "Our FIT Protection can be selected at the time you order for free. Available for ANY window covering that you order from us." (on October 12 it said $9.99 per unit); a help-centre article says a remake applies "if it was added to your order at the time of purchase", whether that is a cellular shade or a faux wood blind. Claims are open for 90 days from the original order, one remake per product and four per household over your lifetime, and the corrected size must be within 2 in. per side; a bigger change is treated as a new order at your cost. But while the guarantees page says "ANY", the terms exclude bulk orders of 25 or more products and awnings. The guarantees page and the terms both say a remake ships "at no additional cost"; the terms add that you pay any difference in price.

Samples and discounts. The samples page allows up to 30 free samples per order; the terms say up to fifteen at one time. The samples page also says SelectBlinds "can honor the applicable promotional offer available when you ordered the sample" on a qualifying order placed within 30 days, so order SelectBlinds' free samples while a sale you want is running.

Lead time. The contact page says "most orders ship within 5 to 10 business days"; the product pages cited here, re-read on 2026-10-20, ranged from "1-2 business days" to "4-5 business days", plus 1 to 7 business days for shipping.

Outside the lower 48 its pages disagree: the About Us page says "additional shipping charges may apply", while the terms say "Shipping includes the continental U.S. only." and a help-centre article says it does not ship to Alaska, Hawaii or abroad.

2. Blinds.com: best if you may want a professional after all

Best for: a buyer who wants a paid fallback, or who already holds an in-home quote. SureFit covers "most products": a remake at no cost within 30 calendar days of receiving the package, one per item and four per household, and "Changes are restricted to size and mount only", so it can fix a wrong mount as well as a wrong size.

Professional help. The installers page's FAQ, re-read on October 20, 2026, offers "a Measurement Assurance Check and professional installation on an unlimited number of windows" for $199, for private residences only and excluding curtains, drapery, outdoor shades and shutters, the price its free-samples page tile shows ("$199 Whole Home"). The home page, saved on 2026-10-05, advertised a professional measure at $0, described as a $50 value; neither page says how the two offers relate.

Discounts. It will "beat their price by 30%" against a qualifying in-home design quote dated within the last 30 days. It also refunds the difference if you see the product at a lower price within 14 calendar days of your purchase.

Watch for. Its pages disagree on the order-change window (24 hours on the order-policies page, 12 on the change-order page) and on free shipping (see the table). The cart shows lead time; the Bali Cellular Shades page showed "Estimated Ship Date: 10/30/2026" on October 20, 2026.

3. Blindster: best for a chance at money back, and for price matching

Best for: a buyer who wants a refund route. Within 60 days of delivery, if Blindster is "unable to make you happy", it helps you return the order "for an exchange or refund", with prior authorization. Refunds are capped at $500 for the same person, household or address within any 12-month period, return shipping is not refunded, and LEVOLOR products, closeouts and commercial orders are excluded.

Measuring and price. Fit-or-Free remakes blinds you measured wrong within 60 days of delivery: "You only pay for shipping, which is $20 per product". The policy sets "a limit of three (3) remakes per order and/or product" (one for shutters) and also says the offer "is available one time per person per lifetime", without saying how the two limits combine. It matches a lower advertised price "and beat it by 5%", and refunds the difference if it lowers its own price within 30 days of your order.

Watch for. Blindster's own warranty is one year from receipt. Its pages disagree on oversize shipping (see the table), on lead time (2-12 business days on the policies page; new blinds "can usually take 5-10 days to produce" on the Made in 1 Day page) and on installation: the measuring FAQ says "We do not currently offer any measuring or installation services", while the installation page sends you to installers on Thumbtack.

4. The Shade Store: best for choosing fabric at home, if you can do without returns

Best for: comparing many fabrics, with a lifetime warranty. It offers "unlimited free swatches"; the home page says they ship in 1-3 days in one place and arrive in 1–3 business days in another. The warranty runs "for as long as the original purchaser owns the product".

The catch for a self-installer. "The Shade Store does not offer returns", and it names no measuring guarantee. If your measurements were slightly off, it may cut down a too-wide shade or offer a one-time 40% Reorder Discount on a replacement within 30 days of installation.

Help if you want it. In-home measurement is free in its service areas and $700+ outside them. Installation has two published price bases: 10% of full list price (15% for drapery and motorized items) with a $250 minimum trip fee in the terms, and fees per foot with a $250.00 minimum on the measure-and-install page. Roller shades are listed as "SHIPS IN 7 DAYS" and, on the same page, "7 business days or less".

5. JustBlinds: best for a 3-year standard warranty, if you will pay for measuring cover

Best for: a careful measurer who wants the 3-year Standard Warranty and a free design consultant. Measuring cover is not included: the 30-Day Measure Protection sits in the paid Deluxe Warranty, "a one-time charge that varies depending on the product", with one remake per product.

Lead time and shipping. The FAQ says an order "will normally ship between 5-10 business days"; home-page tiles say "NORMALLY MADE IN 3 BUSINESS DAYS" for one product and 22 for another. "Most often", orders arrive 2 to 3 weeks after ordering.

6. Costco (Bali storefront): best for Costco members who want a lifetime warranty

Best for: a member who wants Bali's Limited Lifetime Warranty on custom window treatments (Bali Essentials carry a 5-Year Limited Warranty). The storefront is Bali's own site, "Available exclusively online for Costco members". Standard blinds and shades "are normally delivered two weeks after your order is processed", tailored Roman shades in three weeks and custom shutters in six to eight.

Unresolved: returns. The Bali FAQ answers the exchange question with "Visit Costco’s Return Policy page." That page promises to "refund your purchase price" with exceptions, one being that custom products from "Special Order Kiosk and Custom Installed Programs" "cannot be returned or refunded". Neither line names the Bali storefront, so the pages read do not settle which rule applies. No measuring guarantee is published.
